When the Camera breaks down deep in the jungle, resulting in a four-day delay, the 9-member cast and crew of a Bollywood movie, including leading lady, Aasha, and her egoistic co-star, Sharman Kapoor; decide to relax and take an outing with their guide, Setu. They end up at a picturesque spot and decide to spend the night there - not realizing they will soon be stalked and brutally killed by a seemingly invincible, unseen and unknown beast and/or an extra-terrestrial entity.
After Kasturi gives birth to yet another still-born child, her mother-in-law, with the assistance of a nurse, switches the dead child with one of two twins that impoverished Indira has just given birth to. The latter names her child Narsingh, who grows up to be a singer/dancer, and falls in love with Anju, the daughter of a DGP. While the second child is brought up by upper caste, Kasturi and Govind, performs poojas at a variety of weddings and funerals, and is in love with Chandrakala. Chaos will enter their lives when Narsingh will be abducted by a gangster, Baba Bhai, and held until and unless his biological father, an Indian Army Major, reveals a secret. Narsingh manages to escape, continues to elude the gangster and his goons. They then manage to hire an unknowing Chari to impersonate him and compel the Major to reveal the secret. The question remains: will naive Chari be able to pull wool over the Major's eyes?
Mumbai-based Professor Anil Anand co-operates with the Police and despite of warnings from a gangster, decides to appear as a witness. Before he could do so, he is killed, leaving behind his wife, Amina, to bring up their son, Ayaan, on her own. Years later, Ayaan has grown up, respects his mother, and is a devout Muslim, who is in love with Borivali-based aspiring model, Gul, who he hopes to marry soon. But Gul does not know that Ayaan is a hit-man for a gangster named Akram, and will soon confront Ayaan about her knowledge, while he, himself, has to deal with his father's killer(s).

Raghuraman, the owner of a tea plantation in Ooty, takes a walk to the park where he meets Sudukhar the father of a young girl who is playing with her on the playground. The two men begin to talk, and soon Raghuraman is recounting the entire history of his loving relationship with his daughter Abhi, including her first day at school, her growth to independence, and her eventual marriage to Joginder Singh, a gem of a man who turns out to have many surprising qualities. At each stage, this doting father has had difficulty separating from his loving daughter, and accepting her marriage was the hardest. The story as a whole is a gentle and loving comedy with some depth in the narrative.

They live an idyllic, wealthy, and harmonious lifestyle, and a few years later they become parents of a girl, Sarah. When Sarah is of school-going age, Somiya gets a phone call from a woman named Ruby, passionately asking for Karan's company.
Inbasekar, a hit man shoots Michael, a youth leader, off his motorbike on Napier bridge in Chennai. As Michael flies off his bike and falls into the river, bystanding student Arjun is the sole witness. The film then flashbacks into each of their lives, to bring things up to the present day shooting. Inba, the small-time thug dreams of making it big while his perky wife Sasi tries relentlessly to get him to go straight. Michael balances his idealistic posturing with his romance with a gutsy and occasionally unscrupulous neighbor Gitanjali. Siddharth must decide whether going to the US to study is more important than chasing after a girl he falls in love with in a bar Mira who incidentally happens to be engaged to be married.

Aatma is a psychological thriller set in a supernatural framework. It is about the inheritance of loss, a tableau of conflicting emotions played against a diabolic backdrop.
